چکیده

A battery of psychomotor tasks and physiological measures was administered to 206 pairs of twins before alcohol and then three times at hourly intervals after they ingested a standard dose of ethanol (0.75 g/kg body weight). Repeat measurements were obtained for 4l o f these pairs on a second occasion. Performance on motor coordination, standing steadiness, pursuit rotor, arithmetic computation, and reaction-time tasks deteriorated after alcohol, but decrements on the five tasks were generally independent o f each other. Measurements of blood pressure, pulse rate, and skin temperature were all elevated following alcohol intake, but these responses were also uncorrelated. The variance in many of these measures increased after alcohol. An analysis of covariance structure revealed that most o f this additional variance exposed by alcohol was genetic in origin, particularly for standing steadiness, pursuit rotor, arithmetic computation, and pulse rate. Up to 50% of the variance in body sway after alcohol was estimated to be due to genetic factors expressed only under the influence of alcohol. Although significant correlations were found with blood alcohol concentration, previous drinking experience, and the personality trait Extraversion, little o f the genetic variance exposed by

Alcohol reactions in subjects of European descent: effects on alcohol use and on physical and psychomotor responses to alcohol.

Self-reports of reactions to small amounts of alcohol, obtained between 1990 and 1992, were compared with reports of alcohol use, obtained in 1990-1992 and also in 1979-1981, in twin subjects of European descent. Data on subjective, physiological, psychomotor, and metabolic responses to a test dose of alcohol, taken in 1979-1981, were also available. Alcohol reactions were more common in women ...

Effects of GABRA2 variation on physiological, psychomotor and subjective responses in the alcohol challenge twin study.

Multiple reports have identified variation in the GABRA2 gene as contributing to the genetic susceptibility to alcohol dependence. However, both the mechanism behind this association, and the range of alcohol-related phenotypes affected by variation in this gene, are currently undefined. Other data suggest that the risk of alcohol dependence is increased by relative insensitivity to alcohol's i...

A twin study of psychomotor performance during alcohol intoxication: early results.

It Is a commonplace observation that some people are greatly affected by even small doses of alcohol while others seem relatively tolerant to even large doses. How much of this variation in susceptibility to intoxication is genetically deter-mined? Are there environmental factors that influence susceptibility to alcohol? In an attempt to answer-these <iueStio~, we aremeaS"uOi'ig f8-3S-year-old ...
